<On the Wave 파도 위에서>

파도를 기다리는 동안, 물 속에 손을 담그고 가만히 있는 시간을 좋아한다. 먼 바다에서 물결이 시작되면 손에 닿는 밀도가 달라진다. 묵직하고 시원한 물 덩어리가 손바닥을 밀어내며 틈새로 빠져나간다. 그러면 직감한다. 파도가 오고 있구나. 약속이나 한 듯 수평선 위로 길고 선명한 줄이 다가온다. 태평양의 뜨거운 햇볕을 받으며 수천 킬로미터를 여행하던 파도가, 양양 바다에 떠 있던 작은 인간에게 도착한 것이다.

가끔은 파도가 너무 커서 겁이 나 도망치고, 때로는 눈앞까지 다가온 기회를 허무하게 흘려보내기도 한다. 하지만 언젠가는 나에게 꼭 맞는 높이와 세기의 파도가 찾아온다. 황급히 몸을 돌려 해변을 향해 팔을 젓고, 밀려오는 힘이 보드를 들어올릴 때 본능적으로 일어난다. 그리고 파도와 함께 앞으로 나아간다. 날이 선 물살이 부서져 하얀 포말이 되기까지.

한바탕 신나게 파도를 타고 나면 어느새 나는 어린아이로 돌아간다. 해 질 무렵 놀이터에서 그네를 타며 구슬땀을 흘리던 그 시절의 나로. 내가 누구였는지, 무슨 고민을 했는지, 아무것도 생각나지 않는 순간이 온다.

이 경험은 내가 그림을 그리고 이야기를 지을 때 가장 밑바탕이 되는 감각이다. 자연과의 교감, 기다림의 시간, 본능적인 움직임, 그리고 순간의 몰입. 이 모든 것들을 바다에게서 배우고 있다.

캠핑 또한 그런 연장선이었다. 평창의 첩첩산중 목장에서 비에 젖은 숲을 바라보며 아득함을 느낄 때, 새벽녘 귀가 터질 정도로 지저귀는 새 소리에 눈을 뜰 때, 친구들과 맛있는 음식을 만들고 모닥불 앞에서 술잔을 기울일 때. 도시에서는 쉽게 경험할 수 없는 장면들이 마음속에 차곡차곡 쌓인다.

이 전시는 내가 자연 속에서 경험한 자유로움과 따뜻한 유대의 시간을 담은 기록이다. 동물적 본능이 깨어나 거침없이 물살을 가르는 서퍼들, 거센 파도에 휘말려도 훌훌 털고 다시 도전하는 용기, 바다와 숲에서 좋아하는 사람들과 함께한 순간들, 그리고 피식 웃음이 새어 나오는 유쾌한 감정들을 그려보았다.

파도를 그리는 일은 단순한 재현이 아니다. 매 순간 달라지는 물결의 형태와 질감은 고정되지 않는다. 그래서 나는 파도를 감정처럼 표현하고자 했다. 묵직하고, 반짝이며, 때로는 흐릿하게 다가오는 마음처럼. 자료를 모으고 스케치를 한 뒤, 도자기와 캔버스 위에 색을 쌓아가며 바다의 리듬을 화면에 옮겼다.

이 전시를 통해, 바쁜 도시의 속도에 지친 사람들이 잠시 숨을 돌렸으면 좋겠다. 문득 바다나 숲이 그리워지고, 주말의 햇살이 기다려지는 기분이 들었으면 한다.

카이스트에서 산업디자인을 공부하면서 학사와 석사 과정을 마쳤고, 기업에서 디자이너로 일했다. 어릴 적부터 좋아하던 그림을 잘 그리고 싶어 SI그림책학교에서 그림과 스토리텔링을 배웠다. 지금은 개인 작업을 하며 XR(확장현실) 프로젝트도 진행하고 있다. 조금은 허술하고 자유로운, 감정이 살아있는 그림을 그리고 싶다.

<On the Wave>

I enjoy the stillness of keeping my hand in the water while waiting for a wave. When a swell begins from the distant sea, I can feel a change in the density of the water against my skin. A heavy, cool mass pushes against my palm and slips through my fingers. That’s when I sense it—a wave is coming. Like a promise, a long and distinct line approaches the horizon. A wave that has traveled thousands of kilometers under the scorching sun of the Pacific finally arrives, reaching a small human floating in the sea of Yangyang.

Sometimes, the waves are too big and I run away in fear. Other times, I let a perfect opportunity slip by, unable to seize the moment. But eventually, a wave comes that matches me—just the right height and strength. I turn quickly, paddle toward the shore, and as the wave lifts my board, I rise instinctively. Then I move forward with the wave, riding it until the sharp water breaks into white foam.

After riding a wave, I find myself transformed into a child again. Like the me who once swung hard on a playground swing at dusk, sweating with joy. A moment arrives when I forget who I am or what I’ve been worrying about.

This experience forms the foundation of my art and storytelling. The communion with nature, the patience in waiting, the instinctive motion, and the deep immersion in the moment—I’ve learned all of these from the sea.

Camping is an extension of that. Watching the rain-soaked forest from a secluded mountain ranch in Pyeongchang, waking at dawn to birdsong so loud it almost bursts my ears, cooking delicious food with friends, sharing drinks around a campfire—these are scenes not easily found in the city, but they accumulate quietly in my memory.

This exhibition is a record of the freedom and warm connection I’ve experienced in nature. Surfers cutting through the water with awakened instincts, the courage to brush off a wipeout and try again, shared moments with loved ones by the ocean and in the forest, and the light-hearted feelings that bring a spontaneous smile—I’ve tried to capture them all.

To paint waves is not merely to reproduce them. The ever-changing shapes and textures of water resist being fixed in form. So I tried to express waves as if they were emotions—heavy, sparkling, and sometimes vague, like a feeling that comes and goes. After gathering reference materials and sketching, I built up color on ceramics and canvas, translating the rhythm of the sea into the surface.

Through this exhibition, I hope people weary of the fast pace of urban life can take a moment to breathe. That they might suddenly miss the sea or the forest, and find themselves looking forward to the sunlight of a weekend.

I studied Industrial Design at KAIST, where I completed both my bachelor's and master's degrees, and worked as a designer in the industry. Wanting to draw better and reconnect with my childhood love for illustration, I studied drawing and storytelling at SI Picture Book School. Now, I focus on my personal work while also working on XR (Extended Reality) projects. I aim to create drawings that feel a little loose and free—filled with emotion and life.
